Do you go to bed looking at your phone checking emails or Instagram? Well if you do STOP IT! Even if you are reading in your bed, STOP! When you are going to bed, the only thing you should do is turn off your lights, close your eyes and fall asleep.
The amount of sleep is not the only important aspect of sleep; the other is the quality of sleep. How well do you sleep at night and how you feel waking up plays a huge factor in your recovery. Sleep not only affects your physical abilities but it is also vital for your mental focus.
I would recommend downloading the app “Sleep Cycle” on your smartphone. After setting the time you want to wake up on the app, you will place your phone facedown on your mattress and fall asleep. “Sleep Cycle uses sound analysis to identify sleep states by tracking movements in bed.” (Sleepcycle.com) While you sleep, it will track the 3 different states of sleep you go through each night.
If you are anything like me you set 10 alarms at 20-minute intervals on the worst iPhone sound possible and still have trouble waking up. Well ever since I started using Sleep Cycle, I don’t even set an alarm on my iPhone. I only need to set one alarm on the Sleep Cycle App now and it is half as loud as my old alarms. “Sleep Cycle uses a wake up phase (30 minutes by default) that ends at your desired alarm time. During this phase Sleep Cycle will monitor signals from your body to wake you softly, when you are in the lightest possible sleep state. “ (Sleepcycle.com)
To be honest, I don’t know how accurate this app is nor do I really care because ever since using the app 4 months ago my quality and quantity of sleep has improved drastically. I also don’t wake up the whole neighborhood with my alarms. What I do know this app has done for me is, made me more conscious of my sleep. This means, the time I am going to bed at and also making sure I am not on my phone right before bed. Sleep Cycle will also give you a percentage of your quality of sleep each morning and I tend to make it a game within myself trying to get 100% each night. My best is 98% so I challenge you to beat me. The App cost a $1.99 but it is worth the investment to improving your sleeping habits and most importantly your health.
